His professional journey reflects a lifelong dedication to musical excellence, artistic expression, and the development of future generations of musicians.
His musical foundation was established in the church, where the expressive traditions of gospel music first shaped his artistic identity. Beginning his study of the guitar at just nine years of age, he demonstrated an early passion for music that soon evolved into a commitment to education. By sixteen, he was already sharing his knowledge with aspiring young musicians, foreshadowing what would become an enduring legacy of musical mentorship. |

ARTISTRY • EXPERIENCE • LEGACYHis formal musical education began within the Philadelphia Public School System and continued through private instruction at Krill’s Music School in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, and Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. He subsequently pursued studies in Jazz Guitar Performance at Temple University’s Ester Boyer College of Music, further refining his technical command, improvisational abilities, and understanding of musical composition. His artistic development was also enriched through personal study with internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist Jimmy Bruno.
His professional performance career began while he was still in high school, when he entered Philadelphia’s vibrant nightclub and recording scene. As a young sideman, he performed alongside celebrated Philadelphia artists and ensembles, including Fat Larry’s Band, Jean Carne, and The Stylistics. During these formative years, he also studied under bassist Douglas Grigsby. Douglas made time to give back through teaching when not touring with the legendary vocalist Patti LaBelle.
As his career progressed, his musical versatility afforded him opportunities to work with nationally recognized recording artists, including Paul Anka, Yolanda Adams, and the Grammy Award-winning Clark Sisters. His experience as a session musician, touring performer, and sideman has taken him throughout the United States and abroad, providing a breadth of professional experience across diverse musical settings.
Equally significant to his achievements as a performer is his enduring commitment to music education. As his family grew, he increasingly devoted his attention to instruction and mentorship while maintaining an active presence in professional music. Throughout the years, he has guided numerous students in the disciplines of guitar, bass guitar, and piano, nurturing both their technical proficiency and individual artistic voices.
The influence of his teaching extends well beyond the classroom. Several of his former students have gone on to professional careers, performing and recording with internationally recognized artists such as Boyz II Men, The Winans, and Dr. Dre. Others have had the distinction of sharing the concert stage with their former instructor, reflecting the lasting professional relationships fostered through his mentorship.
His educational philosophy is distinguished by the integration of rigorous musical study and practical performance experience. Drawing upon his foundation in authentic gospel traditions, collegiate jazz training, and decades of work within the professional music industry, he offers students an approach that emphasizes musicianship, discipline, artistic interpretation, and the realities of professional performance.
Today, after more than forty years devoted to his craft, he continues to embody the dual traditions of the performing artist and the dedicated educator. His career stands as a testament to the transformative power of music—not only through the audiences he has reached and the artists with whom he has collaborated, but through the generations of musicians whose artistic journeys he has helped shape.
His legacy is defined not simply by the music he has performed, but by the musicians he continues to inspire. |
